So, my little Emma Sue has been all about trying new foods lately. I was making grilled cheese for lunch on Monday (for me, not her) and she was eyeing my cheese and letting me know she wanted some. So, I gave her a bite and she went wild over. She really loved it! So, I continued to give it to her. She ate a half a slice of american cheese on Monday. On Tuesday, all she wanted was cheese. So, I let her eat a whole slice throughout the day. Yesterday, she had half a slice with her lunch.
Last night, as we were eating dinner I could only get her to eat half of her squash/zuchhini. I knew she wanted cheese but I had decided that she was only getting half a slice per day for now so that she would not refuse to eat her regular meal. Anyway, she was refusing to eat much of anything and wouldn't drink her water/juice either. So, I gave her a small piece of my noodle (I was eating cannelloni) and when she put it in her mouth she immediately gagged, gagged again and then looked at me, opened her mouth and out poured her stomach contents. She threw up... not just threw up.. spewed. I mean it was like a hose shooting out. It was the most disgusting thing I have ever seen. I was so shocked!
So, I took her out of her chair and wrapped her in a kitchen towel as much as I could, carried her upstairs and started the bath. Stripped off her nasty clothes and threw her in the tub. Without warning (there is almost always a warning!) she had pooped in the tub, I just happened to see it floating in the water. Again, shocked! So, I took her out, emptied the water, and worked on getting the poop out... it was really soft (which is unusal). I thought nothing of it because it was in water, so of course it would get soft. I took her into her room and put her in pj's, fed her and put her to bed.
This morning, Chris went in and picked her up out of bed and came into our room and said that it smelled like puke in her room. So, I went in and turned on the light but there was no puke in the crib. I walked back in to our room and took Emma and she did smell like puke. I could not figure out, so I thought maybe it was just her clothes from last night stinking up the place (even though I had rinsed them all off). So, I nursed Emma and when she was done I started unzipping her pj's to get her into a clean diaper and clothes for the day. As I'm unzipping I start feeling something mooshy on my hands. I look down and there is poop/diarrhea everywhere inside Emma's pajamas... all over her belly, all the way up her back, all over her legs and now all over my hands. So, I get Chris out of the shower and have him hold her while I wash my hands. Then I peel off her clothes and undo her diaper and there was an amazing amount of poop ... it was just... amazing. It stunk worse than any poop has ever smelled. So, I throw her in the tub again and Chris (being the awesome guy that he is) cleans up the diaper, the changing table, her pj's... everything... I didn't even know he was doing it. How cool is he? Anyway, I digress.
Emma is acting fine and has been the whole time. She's "talking" a mile a minute, smiling like normal, not acting abnormal in any way. No fever, nothing. So, I'm going to deduce that the cheese did not sit well with her. So, I start thinking to myself that maybe she wasn't supposed to have cheese but I could swear that I saw it on the list of OK things from the ped. So, I get on the ped's website and sure enough under the list of things to wait to give until she is a year old, is cheese.
I feel like such a horrible Mom! Now, granted... it is not like she is 4 months old and trying cheese... and she very well could have had zero problems with it and been fine (I know a few moms who are giving their 10 months old cheese and not having any problems). However, Emma obviously did not handle it well! I feel terrible!!
So, the cheese will be put away for another month or so and then we will try again. Maybe instead of processed American cheese we will go to Whole Foods and look for some cheese with less than 25 ingredients in it and see how that goes.
And this is the Mommy Oops post for this month... so far. :)
